Copyright law is a touchy subject. It as if the concept of the law is trying to catch up to the current state of free information that is so readily at everyone’s fingertips. I was always under the impression that Copyright was established to protect an Artist or Authors works from being stolen and or used by someone else to pass off as their own. I knew that a driving force behind the establishment of these laws was closely connected with the monetary values that were being taken from said artist. It’s interesting to think that in a country like America where freedoms are seen so highly that the freedom of knowledge is being stifled. I understand not stealing another work and trying to make money off of it, but if you give the correct credits to those that deserve them, but as long as sources are being cited then there should not be an issue.
Recently a friend who lives in another country sent me a Youtube link to a music video. This music video was a song of Bob Marley, who is extremely popular all over the world, and yet when I clicked the link I got a message that said viewing was not allowed in my country because of possible copyright infringements. It was so incredibly annoying. I have never experienced anything like this. Never could I have imagined that I was being blocked from viewing any kind of work or website. When have we gone too far in limiting what is allowable and not? Technology is constantly advancing and laws need to be adjusted to work alongside the current state instead of in opposition to it. I often wonder what is going to happen to my future children or grandchild in a world where knowledge is going to be much more accessible and how censorship and copyright will play a role. Will they be able to just use and view and download any information they want? Or will there be use exclusive laws that knowledge becomes something only those in the higher standings and power have the ability to access?
