Sex Trafficking – Sources Updated

Boyer, Debra, 2008, Who Pays the Price: Assessment of Youth Involvment in Prostitution in Seattle, City of Seattle Human Rights Services Department. I plan on using this piece as a means to show what is happening in Seattle right now. This will also give me a good basis of facts to use to show the crimes that are being committed.

Boyer, Debra, 2011, View Town Hall Forum – In Our Backyard: A Closer Look at Sex Trafficking of Local Girls, Seattle Channel Videos. I plan on using this video as an updated account of the laws that are now being changed in Seattle and the programs that are being created to help the victims.

Brodeur, Nicole, 2012, Waging War on Human Trafficking, The Seattle Times. I plan on using this source to show what is currently happening in Seattle to help combat the problem of Sex Trafficking. This is a fairly recent article.

Heath, Sarah, 2011, Rape for Profit: new film highlights alarming facts on Seattle Sex Trade, North Seattle Sarah. This site is a interesting blog because it shows what is happening in the neighborhoods in Seattle so that people can see what is happening in their community. The movie it is discussing is really interesting and shows alarming facts, which will be great to incorporate into my paper.

Raymond, Janice and Huges, Donna, 2001, Sex Trafficking of Women in the United States, Coalition Against Trafficking of Women. I plan on using this source as a background for what is happening in the rest of the United States to give a better understand of the numbers and situations within King County.

Reed, Wanda, 2010, Slaves Among Us: Human Trafficking in the Seattle Area, Seattle Woman Magazine, Caliope Publishing Company. This is a great article because it shows how the world’s trafficking issues are playing a role in the issues that you are finding in Seattle.

Typeface….

On my blog it appears that I have two different fonts that are being used. The main one is the same for the titles and the names and writing style on the main part of the blog. The second font is used on the side margins where you find my different categories, this font is in all cap’s and it tends to be a little more fancy that the typical writing font I have on my page. After the lecture in Kane Hall on Wednesday, I think that my page is a little boring when you look at the typeface used. I never really notice things like fonts nor do I put much weight on them. The lecture helped point out that there is a whole world out there of fonts, and that falling back on the typical is failing to notice the beautiful.

The lecture in Kane was definitely eye-opening. I never knew that it took that long to create new fonts. To be honest I didn’t even that it was people who came up with these new fonts. I kind of just thought that it was computer generated. I looked through my work computer and noticed that in the font section I have over 300 options, and I have never used more than the typical Times, Arial and Garamond fonts. I know I am pretty boring now and that I need to open up my use of fonts.

I didn’t really get that there was a difference between typeface and fonts, as you can see above in reading this posting. I was so lost when I went to the lecture. I had no idea what the subject matter was regarding. By definition typeface is the representation or interpretation of a set of characters, it has to do with their appearance. So in order to create a font which is the whole alphabet made up in one single typeface, you must have a completed typeface created.

I really love Bradley font, I used this font for a tattoo and think it’s both smooth and interesting. This would be my personal font option. For a business site I would want to use Bakersfield, because I find it easy to read and simple in its context.

Flickr What? Flickr Who?

I have never used Flickr nor have I ever really even looked at this site. And to be honest I have never really heard of it before this class. So for me this week was a new experience….

Why would this be the site one would choose for posting their photographs?

Is this site just for professional style photography to share or do you find more people using it just to post personal photos for others to view?

I found most of these photos to be amazing, and a lot of them I would want to have framed and on my walls, but is this not something that Flickr allows? Are the pictures just for viewing or do people allow the download or purchase of the photos they are sharing?

After looking over a few classmates postings about their projects I was a little jealous! Most of the students are doing these really interesting portfolio pages that are really creative. I feel like I am falling back on the typical paper scheme that I tend to always stick with. Not sure if this is a reflection on my personal levels of creativity. However, I tend to find writing a paper somewhat refreshing in and of it self. I know that I changed my topic from Facebook to Sex Trafficking in King County and after reviewing other classmates post I am really glad I did. I feel like my topic is really interesting and eye opening and that might make up for its lack of creativity.

I do now think I am definitely going to add the video clippings to my final project page where I post my paper. Visuals tend to be an eye catcher. Another thing I am now thinking of incorporating is an interview with either a current or a former Seattle beat cop. I think that could add an really interesting dynamic to the paper and give it more of a real life backbone.

I am really excited to complete my paper though. I am honestly thinking that I may want to get involved in this situation after

Faster Knowledge = Stupidity?

In on of the readings for this week, Does Google Make Us Stupid?, the article discusses how critics out there are questioning if consumer’s ability to access the answers to their questions with the quick stroke of a few computer keys is in fact making those same consumers dumber. This is an interesting topic. I personally don’t agree with the premise of this article, though I do see some of what they are addressing. Today people rely more and more on the quick answers they can get from a google search, but does this really make them dumber? I think not! In fact I believe that is actually making people smarter. The majority of people in the United States have the ability to access the internet, which is allowing them to use Google to search topics of interest and gain the knowledge to teach others as well.

At any one time during a conversation amongst friends you will find one or even all of us on our smart phones using google to solve an argument. Google is part of the majority of my conversations. My friends and I tend to get in heated debates about different topics we are discussing, with each of us being as stubborn as the next and believing that answers are the right ones. Google gives us the ability to quickly see who is actually right. Its awesome, especially when I am the one that is right and get to prove it! Nothing better than winning an argument.

Times are forever changing, and so will the way that we teach and learn. In the future there might be more education tools via the internet. There was never a time that I wasn’t on a computer in school or learning the news tools that technology was offering. This is going to continue to progress for our future generations. Google is a tool that is used in almost every school project or even paper. It’s a way of gaining knowledge by bypassing the library. It’s almost like a gigantic library at our finger tips. Isn’t that a good thing? I mean don’t we want to be able to be constantly learning? Isn’t that the whole point in our existence the ability to learn new things and move forward in progression? I believe Google is just another tool to allow us to do that.

Sure people are probably using Google more than probably necessary to form thoughts or come up with answers. But it’s almost regardless of how you come up with the answer as long as you get there. Google is almost always the default homepage on new computers and if it’s not you will quickly be prompted to make it. Everyone loves Google. I Honestly don’t know anyone who doesn’t use it constantly, if there was a counter on my work computer that counted the amount of times I accessed Google and used it in one day, I bet it would be in the hundreds. I think that today I use Google to help me with everything, and I happen to be very secure with my brain cells and knowledge!

Sex Trafficking – Timeline

Thesis – I want to have my final thesis completed by February 13th.

Sources – Have all my sources gathered by February 15th.

Drafts – I want to have my first draft completed by Febrary 20th and my second draft finished by February 27th. That will give me time to finish my paper by due date!

In order for this project to be successful I want to feel like people get a better understanding that sex trafficking is not an issue in 3rd world countries, but that it is happening in our backyards, to people who we see on a daily basis without even paying enough attention.

Project Adjustment: Sex Trafficking – The Youth’s of King County

After a lot of time and consideration, I am switching the actual focus of my paper for our class projects. I worked on finding all the sources for the Facebook strategy and just realized that it wasn’t fun. I wanted this project to be something I had a lot of passion about. So I am still writing a paper and using clips to demonstrate my information for visual aide, but instead my topic is Sex Trafficking in Seattle: What is happening and how things can change.

Thesis:

In King County there are an estimated 300 to 500 youth’s under the age of 18 whom are victims of sex trafficking. Online sex solicitation of these youths are on the rise. The laws don’t exist regarding the over 100,000 websites offering child porn and prostitution services, where the majority of these youth’s are being sold. In Seattle these sex slaves are seen as criminals by other citizens and by the majority of King County laws. Instead these youths need to be seen as victims of sexual exploitation and trafficking. There isn’t a place in Seattle that is off-limits to selling these youths. The potential victims can be targeted in every setting, those in the sex business will do whatever they need to get potential money earners. There have been new laws enacted and programs established to help end the selling of our youths and the way that the legal system see’s the victims but there is still a long way to go. This paper is going to bring to focus what is happening, who is being targeting and what we can do as citizens to help bring about change in our own backyards.

The Final Verdict

I made up my mind in class last week about having my project focus on Facebook. I feel like everyone either has a Facebook page and or at the very least knows what it is.

Facebook has become a tool in the court system in the United States. This tool is used to investigate those parties involved in litigation, which can strongly influence the outcome of a case. I don’t think that people are fundamentally aware that their posts and the post of those in their lives can be used against them. I am going to use a few video clips to back up my findings about the every changing settings and the launch of the new Timeline platform, which is now a requirenment in order to stay on Facebook. Timeline is opening a very large door for litigators to find and access users pasts all the way back to the day that they created their page. Through a paper and visual aids I believe people will start thinking a little more about how they use Facebook and if they even want to continue having a page.
